Daycare Camera Buyer's Guide
Most "daycare cameras" decisions go sideways for predictable reasons: proprietary hardware, per-camera bills, and a privacy gap nobody asked about. Print this, take it to every demo, and score each vendor on the seven questions that actually matter.
1. Hardware — will it use the cameras you already have?
Ask: Does it support ONVIF (the open IP-camera standard), or only its own proprietary cameras?
2. Where the footage lives
Ask: Is video recorded on-site, or streamed to the vendor’s cloud?
3. Cost structure
Ask: Is it a flat price, or per-camera per-month? Is storage extra?
4. Privacy & consent
Ask: How does it handle parent consent, access scoping, signage, and audio?
5. Retention
Ask: How long is footage kept, and what does longer retention cost?
6. Integration with your operations
Ask: Can you attach a clip to an incident report, or line video up with the care log?
7. Parent experience
Ask: How do parents view video — a separate app and login, or inside the tool they already use?
Three quick red flags
- "You have to use our cameras." (Lock-in + replacement cost.)
- Per-camera cloud fees with no on-site option. (Bill grows with every room.)
- No clear answer on consent, audio, or who can see the feed. (Privacy risk you'll own.)
Note: camera and privacy rules vary by state and licensing agency. Treat this as a buying aid and confirm specifics — like consent, signage, and retention requirements — with your own licensing office. Minnesota's daycare camera law is one example of how detailed these get: read the plain-English version.
TinyGuard is the integrated option done right: your existing ONVIF cameras, footage on-site, live video in the same dashboard as the care log — one bill. Book a 15-minute demo or see the comparison.
