Can I watch my child at daycare? What live camera access actually looks like
It’s the question almost every parent asks on the tour, usually a little sheepishly: “Can I see her during the day?” It’s not helicopter-parenting. It’s the most natural thing in the world to want a window into the eight or nine hours your child spends somewhere you’re not.
Here’s what live camera access at a daycare actually is, what it isn’t, and how to tell whether a center’s version is the real thing.

What live access actually is
At a daycare that offers it well, live camera access means: during operating hours, you can open an app and see the rooms your child is in. Not a recording you request later — a live view, right now, of the classroom or the playground. It’s permissioned to your family and your child’s spaces, and it’s on while the daycare is open.
That’s the core of it. Everything else is the stuff that tends to come bundled with it.
What it isn’t
A few honest boundaries, because the gap between expectation and reality is where parents get frustrated:
- It’s not 24/7, and it’s not everywhere. Cameras run during operating hours, in common spaces and classrooms — not in bathrooms or diaper-changing areas, and not overnight.
- It’s not a substitute for talking to teachers. The camera tells you that your kid is fine; the teacher tells you how she’s doing. The good version of this makes the daily conversation better, not obsolete.
- It’s not surveillance you’re expected to police. Most parents check in once or twice and feel the anxiety drain out. That’s the point — not to catch something, but to stop worrying.
What usually comes with it
The daycares that do this well rarely stop at cameras. The live view tends to arrive alongside the rest of a parent app:
- Check-in alerts — a notification the moment your child is signed in, so you know they arrived before you’ve left the parking lot.
- Daily reports — naps, meals, activities, sent home so pickup starts with “I saw the finger painting” instead of “how was it?”
- Photos and messages — a thread with the classroom, in the same place as the cameras.
Which points at the real question to ask.
”Cameras” vs. “a parent app with cameras”
Here’s the distinction that matters, and it’s easy to miss. A lot of daycares that advertise cameras are running a separate camera service bolted onto a separate parent app — two logins, two companies, two things that don’t talk to each other. The camera is a different vendor from the daily reports, which is a different vendor from billing.
The version that actually works is one app where the live cameras, the check-in alert, the daily report, and the photos are the same product. When you ask a daycare about cameras, ask whether the video lives in the same app as everything else. If it’s a separate login, you’ll feel the seams.
Why some daycares have it and some don’t
It’s mostly not about whether a director wants to give you a window — almost all of them do. It’s that stitching cameras, a parent app, billing, and compliance together from separate vendors is genuinely hard and expensive, and a lot of centers never get over that hump. The daycares that offer live access have usually made a deliberate investment to do it — which tells you something good about them.
How to ask for it
